Vocational Training for Teenage Mothers Launched in Uganda
As of 8 August 2022, the first hairdressing and beautician vocational training program started for 30 teenage mothers. Some of the teenage mothers already have three children.
Initially, there were 76 applications, but unfortunately only 30 could be admitted. The ages range from 15 to 25. The girls come from extremely vulnerable situations with distressing personal stories. Many of them live with shame and stigma and have low self-esteem. “Girls’ empowerment” is therefore not a luxury. The youngest mother is 15 years old and has a three-month-old baby. She was raped by her father. These young women and their babies deserve a chance at a hopeful future.
Expansion of the Vocational Training
The vocational training for hairdresser and beautician is well underway. It has been expanded with the creation of 32 sleeping accommodation for teenage mothers and their babies, fully equipped with beds, sheets, pillows, desks, chairs, and storage cabinets. In addition, a dining area has been set up in the Contribute building, and a baby daycare with cribs has been established. Previously, the teenage mothers had to sit on the floor and were unable to accommodate their babies during lessons.
They are learning various aspects of the beautician profession, such as facial treatments, pedicures, nail care, eyebrow makeup, and even making their own shampoo and soap as part of self-reliance. The first group of 30 mothers and their 25 babies started in August and completed the program in February 2023.
Awarding of State Vocational Certificates
On 3 March 2023, the festive presentation of the vocational training certificates for hairdresser and beautician took place for the first 25 girls. The certificates were presented by Ajub, the mayor of the seven villages. It was a celebratory day attended by the girls together with parents, friends, staff, and other guests. Besides the mayor, the assistant district leader of Jinja, the chief of police, the district social worker, and the chair of the Local Council were also present.
The lives of these girls and their babies have changed dramatically, and a hopeful future lies ahead of them. In addition to vocational training, life skills such as making soap, shampoo, and domestic agriculture are an integral part of the program, enabling them to create multiple sources of income. Building self-esteem is essential. The motto is: “We can do it.” This leads to the intended self-reliance.
